Vestibular Criticism: A Podcast

Published on 27 June 2025

Podcasting is a relatively new form of critical engagement with contemporary art and its discourses. In this presentation, I propose to explore the relationship between writing and aurality in the context of decolonial art criticism.

My art podcasting practice so far has been invested in the interview or the conversation as a method of producing knowledge.

My research at the Villa Sträuli residency is inspired, both literally and figuratively, by the vestibular system—the innermost part of the ear responsible for not just hearing but orientation and balance. As we see, we also listen and move, and respond with words, thus navigating art, life and history through a coordination of the visual, the aural and the textual.

Focussed on art criticism, my project looks at the form of the transcript as the aural becomes text, the structure of poetry as the text becomes aural, and the role of the voice across these transformations. In this podcast presentation, we consider the interconnection between the eye, the ear and language, offering a different model of art criticism as it rolls off the tongue, swirls into the ears and flows onto the page.

The Podcast is scheduled for release in July 2025
