Launch: TAKE Black, Issue 1

When: 5 March 2010
Where: The Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda

To mark the launch of its inaugural issue, TAKE Black, guest edited by curator, artist and writer Shaheen Merali, TAKE on Art invited contemporary artist Jitish Kallat to give an audio and video presentation on his work on 5 March 2010 at MSU Baroda. The presentation was followed by a dialogue with the audience on how Indian culture impacted Indian art and development of Indian art scene by globalisation and provided an insightful platform to students, researchers and the art community of Baroda to involve in an engaging and inclusive discussion with Jitish Kallat.

TAKE Black

Black must be one of the most loaded words in the English language, as indeed it is in many other languages; the problem of having so many meanings as points of association makes this very simple word common in its usage yet with an intriguing ability to variation. Unlike any other word in any language, no other word can cause so much harm or uncertainty to an individual or a group. It thus merits visual comprehension from artists and art commentators’ observations as to how this one term can echo societies’ recurring images. In celebration of this term, this concept and this enigmatic signifier, TAKE is proud to have worked with contemporary artists and writers to evaluate its place in their thinking and making for the inaugural issue.
